Eco-Tantra

What is Eco-Tantra?

Eco-Tantra is a modern interpretation of ancient Tantric teachings.

Traditionally, Tantra adopted a human-centric perspective; the analogy used in the Tantra is an Experience section is equally human-centric - the receptacles in the analogy are representative of the people around you. But what about the animal and plant life, or the rocks beneath your feet, the wind and the water?

Eco-Tantric Philosophy

Perhaps another analogy would be better then.

The word "tantra" is often interpreted as "loom" or "weave" and such words conjure up images of a tapestry; a giant living tapestry, containing everything that exists in the universe. Everything that exists, all matter, is an image within the tapestry. We are images. But so is the ground we stand on, the buildings and trees that surround us, the people passing nearby, the planets and the stars in the sky.

And the threads (the divine energy known as Shakti) that constitute our own individual images don't stop at the limit of our image - they spread out across the tapestry, weaving over and under countless other threads, connecting and binding the entire tapestry together. But if one of these threads begins to fray and snap, then the entire tapestry weakens. We all suffer.

The Eco-Tantric Life

Eco-Tantrikas are aware of this connectivity, and bring this awareness into the way we choose to live our lives.

We understand that everything in the universe is as divine as ourselves; that all matter is a physical manifestation of the same universal Self. We recognise that to harm nature, is to harm ourselves.

So we seek to protect the delicate threads that bind our environment. But more than that, we also seek to strengthen and maintain them, by developing a sense of inter-connectivity within ourselves, with others and with the natural world.

Eco-Tantric Practice

There exists a wealth of practices that can be used to awaken our inner Shakti (or Kundalini energy) and to enhance our connection to the environment. Many of these practices now constitute the modern discipline of Tantra Yoga - combining postures, movement, breath control, concentration, meditation, recitation and visualisation.

Eco-Tantrikas adopt a naturist approach to Tantra Yoga. We take our practice into the wilderness, removing the barriers between ourselves and the natural world. Our aim is to experience the unifying power of Shakti, and the deep connectivity that exists between ourselves and all that surrounds us.
